And failed. Why? “Perfect condition car, but the battery isn’t secured in place, so it’s an automatic fail”. Independent inspection place, so no repairs done there.

All this while I mended another fail item yesterday (licence plate illumination light).

Off to the junk yard to get a new battery tray with brace it is.

Absolutely bullshit. I assume if you slipped the guy a 20 Euro note it would be a pass all of the sudden. From what I gather it works that way here in Belgium, but I haven’t run into that issue, yet.

Rules are rules. My dad and i redid all battery bracing to be a metal strap around the top and sides of the battery to comply with rules. Rules that were then pulled back to allow the previous method with a threaded bar down either side and a top plate because people had complained alot apparently... Oh well, atleast it’s an easy fix!

Nope. This is an inspection-only shop. 3% of inspections is sampled by the government and if they find irregularities too often a shop loses their license. An inspection-only shop would be out of business. The guy did try to help me secure it temporarily to make it pass, sadly we failed at doing that due to the design of the (broken) battery tray and the lack of parts.

All Belgian inspection shops are government owned/operated. At least I think they are (it seems that way.) Good luck with the fix!

Had kind of the same bullshit with our car a couple of years ago. It failed because the brake rotors had some spots of light surface rust - nothing too big. We had to get it fixed and the service guy from out dealer explicitly asked us if it would be really neccessary.

Same happened to me on the Series 3. Battery was unsecured because the metal loop just fell off somewhere (as Land Rovers are won't to do), but the MOT dude zip tied in place then passed it. His parting comment was 'get that fixed, it's not proper.'

No chance of just wrapping a ratchet strap round it? Thats how we got our saxo to pass.

In the Netherlands the vast majority of people have their inspection done at their dealer/shop/whatever where they have their maintenance done as well. It’s what they do in Germany as well, right? I just wanted to be an oddball and go to an independent inspection-only shop. Luckily the re-check will be free.

My 306 hadn’t been inspected in the Netherlands before, it still has a valid German TÜV until next month (it’s been imported from Germany a year ago)

We actually tried, but due to the design of the battery tray we couldn’t secure it. Doesn’t matter, the re-check will be free if I have it done within 2 weeks. It just costs me some time and annoyance.

Yet people think the Shaken is some kind of absurdly stringent almost impossible to pass (without serious €€€) inspection.

If you’re in California, it definitely isn’t if you have another car... Lots of states require inspections and safety. California inspections are a bit fucked up though...

We fell for the inspection by the dealer once - and my parents (non car persons) ended up with a €1.000 bill. The guys from the place where we get our inspection done are usually not that nitpicky. I got the inspection done last week and the Dekra guy didn’t even wanted to see the first aid kit and safety triangle. As long as everything on your car looks and works like it shoud the state inspection should be easy.

Bugger. I’ve had a similar thing actually. My Alfa’s just failed it’s MoT because one of the steering rack boots had a bit of a split in it.

Nevermind the fact that it was pouring oil out of the rear rocker cover that had slipped out of place when I was fitting it, enough to coat the exhaust down to the catalytic converter under the car.

That’s an advisory, but a split in the steering rack boot. Everyone stop. It’s unsafe to drive.

Could you make some sort of strap for it, or do your inspections require that the factory setup be there?

306 Cabriolet! One of the best looking peugeot convertibles in my mind. Had one myself, bought it with a broken engine, changed the engine, drove for 2 years, and sold it with a broken engine...
Does yours burn oil like mine did?
Only picture I have left of mine: it was metallic black on black leather, with black 16" Peugeot ouragan wheels (those look so good on a 306) and a red circle. I want it back so badly!

I failed on exactly that point (and something else) a few years ago. No dealer inspections though so you have to go away, fix your car or get it fixed and then re book.

I’ve had only one number plate light for years and they haven’t noticed.

That seems above and beyond the call of duty. I failed for the same thing (loose bolts on the securing bar) so I had to go away and tighten them.

It's a shame he didn't see fit to just grab a spanner for the sake of two bolts, especially when he has to re-test to pass. I know there's limits, and if they did that to every person's car then they'd be out of pocket, but two easily accessible loose bolts? A tiny bit of customer service goes a long way.

It’s not a garage though and they wouldn’t even have tools other than something to poke around looking for rust. Testing here is done by an agency who tendered for the job and who do nothing except test. It’s in their interest to fail you as there’s a charge for a further test if it uses test equipment. A visually inspected fault however is retested free.

No broken engine on mine. Mine is an early one with the 8 valve 2 liter engine. It runs great and I just had the timing belt changed. I didn’t really notice any oil consumption.

It should be securely in place. It’s a pragmatic regulation. You don’t need to use a factory design, as long as it does the job.

I had the same engine (XU10 J2C (RFX)). They have a tendency to burn oil when you push them a bit, and they let you know if you failed to refill them in time (mine did, it only had 130.000km). Maybe yours is in better shape. But don’t make the same mistake I did, keep an eye on the oil level. By the way, I had a 307 later that also burned some oil, when I asked Peugeot, they said that about 0.5L/1000km is normal for those engines. I sold it.

I also own a 406 coupe, with the EW10 two liter engine. It uses about 1L/10,000 km. Going extra fast on the German Autobahn does increase oil usage, in my perception.

Fine except that it’s now giving audible warning of its approach. Which is a pity because that throws the lambda figure out so I’ll need a new exhaust section (it’s been welded rather too much by now).

Oh, and rust. I’ve been told several times by my garage that it’s bound to fail because of dodgy chassis rails.

The 306 officially has until July the 31st, but as I want to sell it a new inspection might help and it’s within 2 months, so the July 31st date will stand. And, other than the battery and a tiny bit of play in a ‘stuurkogel’ the inspection guy couldn’t find a thing. Only the former problem made it fail inspection.

I’m starting to like these independent places. It’s €41,50 for a gasoline vehicle, and they have zero reason to make you fail if it’s not warranted as they don’t do repairs. A re-check within 2 weeks is free.
